The Chain Lakes
Which Chain Lake and Why?Rose Lake is quiet, scenic and popular with anglers. Rose lake is ~ 5 miles drive from Camp Chain Lakes with a boat ramp, dock and toilet. Idaho Fish and Game stocks Rose Lake with catfish annually. Bull Run Lake is small and swampy, a few miles upstream, accessed by highway 3 & Bull Run Road. Killarney Lake is one of the larger chain lakes. There are two docks, a boat ramp, a beach volleyball net, and toilets. Killarney Lake is 3 miles from Camp Chain Lakes, or accessible by canal downstream. Idaho's best kept secret is Popcorn Island, at the north end of the lake, which has a dock, toilet, first-come-first-serve camping, and can only be accessed by boat or kayak. Medicine Lake is 8 miles down highway 3, accessible by road or canal, with a boat ramp, dock & toilet. Cave Lake is the largest chain lake at 1,640 acres. The Medimont Trailhead, fishing, the cave (spooky?), accessible by kayak or boat, and Medicine Lake are the main attractions. Swan Lake is only accessible by boat or kayak, from the river. There's an island that's underwater during winter and spring, but appears as the water level drops. Will you be able to find the island? Black Lake is adjacent to the Trail of the Coeur D'Alene's bike path, also accessible via canal. The shoreline of Black Lake is privately owned, mostly by the Coeur D'Alene Tribe. Blue Lake is the most private Chain Lake, only accessible from the river by boat or kayak via canal. Thompson Lake, renowned for bird watching and fishing, is perfect for a day trip, complimented by evening dinner and drinks in Harrison. There's a boat ramp and access from the river by canal. Anderson Lake is a fisherman's paradise, home to Idaho's record largemouth bass catch. |
Happy Campers
This is an awesome camp spot! Right on the river, primitive camping at its absolute finest. We had a great 3 days staying here. Kellogg is close by in case you forget things - which is really nice! I would definitely recommend this spot to those looking for a great swimming spot and camping getaway. We had two dogs there and they absolutely loved it! So much wildlife. Saw a lot of bald eagles, ospreys, beavers. Super neat!

This is a great jumping off point for those looking to venture out into the wilderness nearby. The Black Rock access point for the Trail of the Coeur D' Alene is a short distance west on the Highway. Killarney lake access is across the street and Acres of forest are also nearby. A quick glance at the map shows all the places you can start your adventure. The region following the CDA river is filled with wildlife. Lots of marshlands, Birds, Deer, Beaver and even Moose.
